When Memory Care Becomes A Necessity: Transitioning From Home To A Memory Care Unit

Blog

For people who have early dementia, living at home as long as possible often becomes a goal. While this can be accomplished by putting a support system into place and ensuring care care needs are met within the home, there may come a time when a memory care facility becomes a necessity. If the individual doesn't have the funds to pay for personal care around the clock, yet they are not safe at home alone, it's time to transition to a memory care unit. Once it is clear that memory care is needed, transitioning from home to a memory care unit can be difficult. If you are a caregiver, you can help support this transition in a number of ways.

Be Clear About What is Going On

Even if you are not sure that your loved one understands that they are moving, you should be clear that they will be moving to a place that can keep them safe. While they may be resistant to moving, stay as calm as you can. If talk about moving only gets your loved one more upset, be there to listen and answer questions. Talk about your concerns, and be there for your loved one to talk about their fears.

Setting Up the New Space

If your loved one is moving to a memory care facility, you will be able to help create a familiar space within the new facility. If they have a special chair they like to sit in all the time, move the chair to the care facility. Set up the space so that it is familiar without being overwhelming. A few pieces from home can make your loved one feel comfortable, while too much furniture will make the space crowded.

Visit Your Loved One Often

When your loved one is transitioning to a memory care unit, visit as often as you can. Your familiar face can be very reassuring to your loved one, and they will know that you are watching over their care. Bring a favorite cup of coffee or a small treat when you visit so that they feel special. Your visits will have a positive impact on your loved one, and you can be there to advocate for their needs if something comes up.

Memory care is necessary when your loved one is no longer safe at home. If 24-hour care can't be provided in the home, then a memory care facility is the answer. Keep your loved one safe and help them transition to a memory care unit when necessary.

Exploring The Assisted Living Facility Options

Hello, I am Dylan. When my remaining grandparent injured his hip, I was determined to help him achieve the best possible outcome. I knew the risks of letting him live alone in his house, so I offered to move in. He was adamant that I stay in my home, which inspired me to take him to visit assisted living facilities to help him remain living on his own without the risks. The assisted living units were perfect for his needs and we found one quickly. I want to use this site to help other people identify ideal assisted living facilities for themselves or their loved ones. Thank you for visiting my site.
